History of Northart

Northart started out in November 1998 as the Westshore Arts Centre.  An extensive renovation was completed in September 2000, and we were rebranded Northart. CommunityArtsCentre.  At that time the current Gallery 4 was a Community Art Room, offices and storage space.

In October 2005, Northart took over the lease of another space in the Norman King Building.  We converted it into a community/teaching room (Art Room 6), with attached storage and work spaces.  The former Community Art Room was then renovated into three exhibition galleries (gallery 4 and 4B, and a members' gallery) for small, community-focussed exhibitions, less formal than in the main gallery.

August/September 2010 saw a complete remodelling of these spaces: Art Room 6 was converted into Gallery 5, Gallery 4 changed shape and all of the offices, storage and workspaces were rationalised, giving the whole space a fresh new look.

Today, while we are now known only as Northart, the centre keeps its roots: we are still administered by the Westshore Community Arts Council.  Northart now occupies most of the ground floor of the Norman King Building. We have five galleries – three separate but adjoining exhibition spaces in one wing, two in the other – plus the small Members’ Gallery (contained within Gallery 4), and additional window display spaces.
