‘Spirit of Place’ on RNZ National’s Standing Room Only

Young Maori photographer Akura Makea-Pardington talks to Lynne Freeman about the “bitter sweet” stories behind her new collection of images, ‘Spirit of Place’, as she looks at Northland's colonial history with fresh eyes, and her camera lens. The Matariki show opens at Northart at 4pm on Saturday 4 June and runs until 22 June (except for Queen’s Birthday 6 June.)

Akura Makea-Pardington is looking at Northland's colonial history with fresh eyes, and her camera lens.  She considers the good and bad aspects of the colonial era in an exhibition she calls 'Spirit of Place', and offers the backstories to the images in her photos - from a flagpole to a po. Akura, whose mother is photographer Fiona Pardington, says the stories she's telling are "bitter sweet".
