What's On at Northart in March
WHITE WORKS | WHITE NIGHT
Gallery open 6pm to 10pm Saturday 18 March
Performance by Birkenhead College Jazz ensemble
Exhibition runs till 4 April
Northart once again joins in the exhilarating city-wide celebration of the arts on Auckland Arts Festival’s White Night. This year, invited member artists join forces with students from the North Shore’s only tertiary art college, Hungry Creek Art & Craft School, to present their interpretation of White Works – a diverse exhibition of painting, photography, collage, ceramics, textile art, object art and jewellery. Birkenhead College’s talented jazz ensemble will provide entertainment at the start of the evening.
WARWICK BROWN: FAMILY REUNION
2pm Sunday 5 March
Exhibition runs till 12 March
Art critic, curator and noted speaker Warwick Brown will take visitors on a walk through contemporary New Zealand art history as he reveals some of the fascinating stories behind his Family Reunion collection, featuring works by Colin McCahon, Tony Fomison, Pat Hanly and several other of our most celebrated artists. All are welcome.
RICK ALLENDER: LIGHT WATER
Open daily till 7 March
Rick adapts traditional marquetry techniques to present impressions of light and water and identify the subtle arrays of natural and man-made illumination on the Hauraki Gulf.
MICHAEL ANDERSON: RECENT PAINTINGS
Runs till 7 March
Michael’s paintings use gestural mark making and the viscosity of his mediums to explore the materiality of paint.
LATER IN MARCH
19 March to 4 April
Opening event 6pm Saturday 18 March
Assembly brings together the work of 13 painters who participated in the 2016 Browne School of Art Professional Practice group. Encouraged by their tutor Matthew Browne to develop further as artists while still retaining their own style, the distinctive ‘voice’ of each practitioner is evidenced by the variety of works hanging in the show, making for a lively and colourful exhibition.
IN THE WINDOWS
8 to 23 March
Opening and blessing 2.30pm Saturday 11 March
See the world through the eyes of a group of aspiring young North Shore photographers, invited last month to participate in a free photography workshop run by professional artists in Northart’s Studio Space as part of the Auckland Arts Festival's Whānui programme. The results of their endeavours will be proudly displayed in our window spaces, and blessed at a special event in the gallery on Saturday 11 March.
AS EASTER APPROACHES
XIV STATIONS OF THE CROSS
26 March to 17 April
Opening event 5pm Saturday 25 March
We mark Lent by inviting 14 of our member artists to each create a work that represents their personal depiction of one of the Stations of the Cross. This traditional meditation on the last hours of Christ’s suffering and death is installed in the window gallery, creating a walk-by exhibition that can be viewed both during the day and under lights at night.
GALLERY TIME FOR KIDS
PAINTING WITH TEXT
Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 March
11am to 1pm
It’s not often children get the chance to appreciate some of our most iconic artists’ works up-close, but that’s what they will do in this month’s drop-in classes, wandering around Warwick Brown’s Family Reunion show. They’ll then take those impressions back to the Studio Space, where they will follow the lead of Colin McCahon, making their own compositions incorporating text. Suitable for kids five and over, with entry by gold coin donation.
GALLERY TIME FOR LITTLE KIDS

TISSUE TRANSFER ART
Wednesday 15 March
11am to 12 noon
Our March classes for pre-schoolers will share the art of making collage, and using tissue transfer. These tutored sessions take place on the first and third Wednesday of every month and are open to 2 to 4 year olds accompanied by a parent. For more information and to book, contact Anna.
