What's On at Northart in November

PACIFIC LINKS

30 October to 19 November
Opening event 4pm Sunday 29 October

Fidalis Buehler, whose delightfully whimsical paintings have been exhibited at Northart on several occasions over the past few years, returns to New Zealand to curate a show that brings together multimedia works by eight American artists connected through Brigham Young University, located in Provo, Utah in the Intermountain West of the United States. The exhibition examines the associations the Kiribati-American artist, who was brought up in the Solomon Islands, and his colleagues all have or have had with the Pacific. For some the experiences were short lived while for others the tapestry of cultural experience makes up a significant aspect of their identity. While they all share a common collegiality and belief system in their Mormon faith, there is a peculiar nuance to their lifestyles and personal histories through their South Pacific experience that makes the show all the more compelling.

SOLO SHOW
CLAUDIA COOPER
30 October to 15 November
Opening event 4pm Sunday 29 October

Claudia Cooper presents her first significant solo exhibition since moving to New Zealand from South Africa in 1995. After receiving her formal art training in Houston, Texas, Claudia taught and exhibited mostly ceramic work on her return to South Africa, before holding her first solo painting show there in 1988. She has been working concurrently on two series of works for this exhibition: One relating to French landscapes with soft impressionistic colour and atmosphere, the other being a series of more vivid abstract landscapes which explore the stark contrasts between the Karoo desert of her homeland and her new environment in New Zealand.
