WESTLAKE ON SHOW

9 to 25 October
Opening event 4pm Sunday 8 October

The popular annual Westlake show returns to Northart with a multimedia exhibition of painting, photography and object art by established and emerging artists and tertiary and secondary school students. Included in this year’s line-up of former students and teachers from Westlake Girls’ and Westlake Boys’ High schools are art luminaries Jeff Thomson, Monique Redmond, Dagmar Dyck, Garry Currin, Phil Neary and Reg Mombassa. Their works will display alongside those of current senior students and the talented educators that help them on their way while continuing with their own art practice.

BOOK CRAFTS
BOOKWORKS
9 to 25 October
Opening event 4pm Sunday 8 October

BookWorks is a fascinating display of 35 handmade and bound books created by members of the Association of Book Crafts. All are highly imaginative in shape, size and the use of materials, which range from paper, card, felt, lace and fabric to plastic, and some are adorned with thread, beads, paper collage and more. A number of the books on display have also been entered in the ABC annual competition, and winners will be announced by judge David Ashman at the opening function.

INVITED ARTISTS
GROUP SHOW
9 to 25 October
Opening event 4pm Sunday 8 October

Also opening during Artweek is a group show by painters Wendy Leach, Janmarie Thompson and Christine Tizard, as well as printmaker Jacqueline Aust. While Jacqueline, Janmarie and Christine are regular exhibitors at the gallery, this is the first occasion Wendy has shown her work at Northart. A graduate of both Elam and Whitecliff, she recently returned to New Zealand after a long period overseas. Wendy and her fellow exhibitors focus on the importance of mark-making as a mode of expression in their practice.

IN THE WINDOWS

RE:TRACE NORTHCOTE
5 to 15 October
EGYPT TOLOGY
18 October to 15 November

History – both recent and ancient – features in Northart’s window spaces this month. First up, as part of Auckland Heritage Week and Artweek, and supported by Panuku Development Auckland, is an absorbing exhibition of historic photographs of Northcote, a number of which have been contributed by local residents. Then from mid-month the gallery benefits once again from the enormous archives of well-known collector and curator of historic art and antiquities, John Perry. His latest installation presents 5,000 years of Egyptian material culture in the form of various fascinating objects he’s amassed over the past four or five decades.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS
ART CLASSES
4, 5 and 11 October
STUDIO SPACE
See website for times

Primary and intermediate aged children can get creative during the school holidays with five tutored art classes. Clay Time kids encourages kids to sculpt a creature of their choice, then paint it the following week. With Bath Delights, they get the chance to make their own scented fizzy bath delight in a decorated jar. In Paint Like Picasso they’ll create a Cubist self-portrait using paint, pencils, pastels and dye. And Be a Bookmaker lets them design and make their own book with a cool cover. There is a $5 materials fee for each class, payable on booking. Visit our website for details or contact Anna to enrol.

WEEKEND WORKSHOP
BOOK MAKING
21 and 22 October
10am to 4pm

A weekend workshop in our Studio Space gives you the opportunity to try your hand at crafting your own book from scratch. Tutor Ailie Snow, an artist whose work centres on textiles and books, will guide you through the process, with a particular focus on stitching. Cost for the two days is $150 plus a small fee for construction materials provided by the tutor. Bookings are essential, so contact the gallery for further details and enrolments.

GALLERY TIME FOR LITTLE KIDS
HALLOWEEN CRAFTS
Wednesday 18 October
11am to 12 noon

Pre-schoolers will get to make their Halloween decorations and paintings nice and early, with a little help from tutor Michelle Wilkson and a few pre-cut templates of bats, spiders, witches and pumpkins. These drop-in classes, on the first and third Wednesday of every month, are suitable for children aged between 2 and 5, accompanied by an adult.

AFTER SCHOOL ART CLUB
8 WEEK PROGRAMME
Every Wednesday, from 25 October
3.30pm to 5pm

During term 4 we’re trialling a weekly, hands-on class to introduce aspiring young artists to some of the materials, tools, forms and methods used in art, and to assist them in gaining confidence in their own abilities. They’ll learn about a different ground-breaking artist (amongst them Warhol, Pollock and Miro) every week and make two- or three-dimensional pieces based on their famous works. Tutored by artist Michelle Wilkinson, the 8-week programme is suitable for students aged 8 to 15. Visit the website for more information and to book.

Open daily 10am to 4pm during exhibitions, except for public holidays.

Galleries closed during installation Thursday – Sunday this week, and closed Labour Day Monday 23 October.
