What's On in December
POCKET EDITION. SMALL WORKS FOR LARGE WALLS
Runs till 15 December
The large and receptive crowd at the opening of the ‘Pocket Edition’ exhibition earlier this month was an indication of what a firm annual favourite it is amongst the Northart community. The standard postcard-sized format gives many of the gallery’s well-established artists – 32 of them in this year’s show – a chance to have some fun with smaller pieces and provides the public with an opportunity to purchase high quality compact works at affordable prices.
Painter Karen Jarvis, who is participating in ‘Pocket Edition’ for the first time, says she loves the concept of the show. “Ten postcard-sized images from a variety of artists. The combination of uniformity (in terms of scale) and contrast (in terms of style) makes for a unique experience for artist and viewer.”
Another of the delights of the exhibition is that it’s cash and carry, but even after the busy opening night the show remains intact throughout, with sold pieces replaced with good stencilled photocopies.
Samples of some of the works on show and the full list of participating artists are here.
2 to 15 December
Opening event Sunday 1 December at 5pm
Another perfect opportunity for affordable gift buying is the ‘Christmas Show’, opening in galleries 4 and 5 at the end of the weekend. Small mostly 3-D works of art and craft — ceramics, wood, calendars, cards, jewellery and various other items – will be available on a cash and carry basis, so once you have paid for the piece you can take it away with you.
IN THE WINDOWS
29 November to 6 December
Timed to coincide with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December and organised by Yes Disability, Re-imagine is a poignant exhibition of 12 photographic images that celebrates the diversity of young people with disabilities. Dressed in Māori or Pasefika cultural attire, the subjects challenge perceptions and aim to break down stigmas that surround the disability sector in these communities. The photographs will be replaced on 7 December with a group show that will run in the window galleries until Northart closes on 15 December.

LANDSCAPES FROM KELLIHER COLLECTION
28 January to 19 February
Opening event Sunday 26 January at 5pm
Northart’s 2020 calendar will kick off with a significant exhibition of landscapes from the Kelliher Art Trust collection. Selected by curator Christopher Johnstone, the show will include works by recipients of the Kelliher Art Award, presented annually from 1956 to 1977, as well as other superb landscapes acquired or commissioned by the Trust.
Northart would not be the engaging space it is without the wonderful support of our members and many regular visitors. We thank you one and all for your support and interest in the gallery, and wish you a wonderful festive season. Our first newsletter of 2020 will be sent out on 23 January.
Open daily 10am to 4pm during exhibitions, except for public holidays.
Northart and all its galleries will close for the summer break at 4pm on Sunday 15 December and re-open at 10am on Tuesday 28 January.
