Northart’s highly anticipated annual Drawing and Works on Paper show brings together pieces by some of the gallery’s most accomplished and senior artists, including Robert Ellis, Garry Currin, Ross Ritchie, Alistair Nisbet-Smith and John Nicol. ONE WEEK TO GO
BEVERLY RAE: COLOUR
Closes 8 May
The vibrancy of Beverly’s paintings belies the sense of isolation and loss they depict of marginalised Aborigine and Māori women. Born in Takapuna but with strong family ties to Australia, the stark but colourful landscapes of that country have always fascinated the Elam-trained artist. This is her first solo show at Northart.
Runs till 15 May
A strong sense of colour is one common thread in the otherwise diverse collection of themes and styles of our current exhibitors, mid-career painters Jo Dalgety, Sonja Drake, Gayle Forster, Lindsey Kirk, Merthyr Ruxton and Susan Thomas. Jo’s landscapes look at how the earth holds memories, while Sonja’s body of work seeks to reveal precarious line that divides creation and destruction, and Gayle’s most recent themes involve how the land has responded to human habitation. The Auckland Harbour Bridge features strongly in Lindsey’s pieces, while Methyr’s and Susan’s paintings are abstracts.
TOUCH OF KOREA
12 to 22 May
Opening event Saturday 11 May at 4pm
In mid-May we welcome back the New Zealand Korean Fine Arts Association for their annual exhibition at Northart. This year seventeen members of the group are exhibiting painting, print making and sculpture. All the artists live and work here but have retained strong links with their home country and enjoy sharing its culture and the art it inspires.
LOGAN BREWER: WAITEMATĀ
20 May to 19 June
Opening event Sunday 19 May at 4pm
Later in May, Northart is privileged to be showcasing a collection of mostly small sculpture by acclaimed designer, the late Logan Brewer. Drawn from his ‘Waitematā’ series, they will display alongside several highly coloured reliefs that were a precursor to the series. When the ‘Waitematā’ sculptures were first shown at Northart in 2013, they were described by art historian Amy Stewart as “the perfect balance between simplicity, complexity, and sheer easy beauty”.
END OF MAY
ROINN: A GROUP SHOW
27 May to 12 June
Opening event Sunday 26 May at 4pm
With the Scottish Gaelic term for ‘share’ as its theme, Fiona Lee Graham curates a group show that will include her works alongside those of seven other female artists – Frances Rood, Margaret Benn, Bonnie Kelly, Andrea Halley, Jane Tan and Karen Jarvis – all from Auckland.
GALLERY TIME FOR KIDS
WATER COLOUR MAGIC
Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 May
11am to 1pm
In our May workshops, children get an up-close look at the paintings in the all-women show, focussing on how they were created. They will then have various techniques demonstrated while they experiment with making different marks using watercolour paint before incorporating these in their final artwork on pre-stretched watercolour paper. The drop-in sessions run by an experienced artist are suitable for kids five years and over, accompanied by a parent or caregiver. A suggested donation of $2 to $5 covers all materials provided.
IN THE WINDOWS
PAINTINGS & SCULPTURE

An engaging series of paintings by Dominque Baker, Frank van Schaik and Garry Currin, along with bronze sculpture by Phil Neary and clay sculpture by Siân Davis, adorn the gallery’s window spaces for the first half of May. They can be viewed both by day and under lights at night.
Open daily 10am to 4pm during exhibitions, except for public holidays.
